Availabilty : Space for 14 Students in First and Second year, Jazz and Classical Programs. Private Instruction also available to 3-5 students.
Main styles, concepts taught: Laurence has a unique approach to teaching the bass rooted in an extremely wide range of playing experiences. He began playing Rock and Jazz music on the bass at age 14, and has gravitated heavily toward the Classical world in the last ten years. He has studied Double Bass with Ken Friedman at The University of British Columbia, and participated in Masterclasses with Gary Karr, Marc Johnson, Alain Caron, and John Patitucci. His bass teaching combines several facets of his 20 years of experience, and aims at opening students up to the broad world of bass playing. Sight-Reading, Ear-Training, Theory and Technique are the cornerstones of his lessons.

Experience (teaching, professional, gig):
A mainstay of the West Coast Music Scene, Laurence is active in a wide variety of fields, Including Classical, Jazz, Latin, and World Music. He plays both Double Bass and Electric Bass and has performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Chamber Choir, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Vancouver Opera Orchestra, Elektra Women's Choir, the Vancouver Bach Choir, and has been Principal Bass in community orchestras including the Okanagan Symphony and the Prince George Symphony. His Jazz credits include work with Herb Ellis, Louis Bellson, the Daryl Jahnke Trio, and his own Quartet. He recently recorded a live CD with the Chilean band Sumalao, and regularly plays salsa with Sal Ferrares and Brazilian music with Celso Machado. Laurence's versatility has also involved him in theatre work including the musicals "Show Boat and "Forever Plaid. He played on the soundtrack for the award-winning feature film "Live Bait" and can be seen in the films "Look Who's Talking Now" and "Wrongfully Accused". He recently played with Chinese Classical Musicians for the short film "Tears of a Lotus". In his spare time, Laurence enjoys making fine Bass Guitars (See pictures for example).
